Are you using social media effectively for your judo club? Want to know the secret?
I always speak to people who would like to use social media more effectively for their judo club.
So in this blog post, I will talk to you about strategies I have used to grow my membership in the past, what I am focussing on now and 20 ideas for posting on social media.
Before I go any further, I think it is important to explain two terms:
Organic Social Media posts – Posting on your page (as you normally would)
Paid Social Media posts – Paying for your posts to be put in front of people (could be boosted posts or specific ads).
So, most of you will know I run Fighting Fitness Judo with my wife.
And since the pandemic, we have grown our club membership to nearly 600 members (no schools judo).
How?
Much hard work and lots of marketing.
Which included Meta (Facebook and Instagram), where we spent over £15,000 running ads.
Some might think that is a lot of money … and it is.
But through our systems and business development plan, we’ve seen over 13x return on our investment (ROI).
Now, why am I telling you this?
I promise it’s not to brag. It’s to prove that I have been doing this for a while now and have noticed a change.
So a bit of context for you: I was focused only on paid social media advertising for about two years.
It saved me time, got me in front of many eyeballs within my area, and got many new people joining our club.
When most judo coaches were heading into schools to do days and days of tasters classes, I sat in front of my laptop for a day writing some ads, creating some images and videos, pressing go and watching the enquiries coming in.
It cost me money, but it saved me soo much time! Which I was short on.
Side note: to grow your club, you will need to either spend your money or your time.
In the last year, we noticed that our paid social media ads were less effective than before.
After speaking to a few friends who use similar advertising systems, we noticed a trend.
Advertising spending was going up, and results were coming down.
Why?
A few reasons …
- A lot of people were advertising on Meta. This raised the prices and meant people were more likely to ignore them in their feeds.
- Social Media platforms want people to stay on their sites for as long as possible…
And this leads us to how we have updated our social media strategy.
If you’ve not checked out our Facebook page before, click here and take a look.
We’re committed to producing 20 pieces of Organic Social Media content weekly on Facebook and Instagram.
Why?
- Meta wants you to post regularly. If you do, it improves how many people will see your posts.
- People are likelier to spend time on your page looking at your posts and website.
- Increases the number of people who share your page.
- It improves your Paid Social Media ads reach and becomes cheaper.
- Increases the number of people enquiring about your classes.
Now, we still use paid advertising. It still works if you know what you are doing… And we still use offline marketing too.
But people are using social media differently.
People will look at a post, check out your Meta page (Facebook or Instagram), and check out your website.
If everything looks good, and they are interested in your services, they will ask for more information.
This is why it is essential to be consistent online, from social media presence to website.
Now, I know you are sitting there saying Vince, great for you … but I have no idea what to post, and there is no way I can post 20 pieces of content weekly.
So let me help.
First of all, use the Meta business suite and schedule your posts. This way, you can batch them together. Saving you time and meaning you do not have to stop what you are doing to write a post.
Second, I have listed 20 ideas for social media content – this is not the exact template I use, and I would advise changing bits to suit your club. But it should at least create some ideas for you.
20 different ways you can create engaging content for your club’s social media pages:
- Share training tips and techniques: Whether you post a video of an Olympian demonstrating a throw or share a written tutorial, your followers will love learning new ways to improve their judo skills.
- Share event updates and reminders: Keep your followers in the loop by sharing details about upcoming clinics, tournaments, or other events.
- Share student and club achievements: Show off your students’ and instructors’ hard work and dedication by sharing photos and updates about belt promotions, tournament wins, and other accomplishments.

The most important thing is to remember to have fun and engage your followers with various content types and formats. Happy posting!
Here is a sample monthly post calendar for a judo club’s social media pages:
Week of the month | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
1st | Training tip or technique | Student or club achievements | Motivational quote or message | Behind-the-scenes photo or video | News articles or research related to judo | Instructional video or tutorial | Personal story or testimonial |
2nd | Instructional video or tutorial | Behind-the-scenes photo or video | News articles or research related to judo | Training tip or technique | Student or club achievement | Motivational quote or message | Personal story or testimonial |
3rd | Motivational quote or message | Instructional video or tutorial | Behind-the-scenes photo or video | News articles or research related to judo | Training tip or technique | Student or club achievement | Personal story or testimonial |
4th | Student or club achievement | Motivational quote or message | Instructional video or tutorial | Behind-the-scenes photo or video | News articles or research related to judo | Training tip or technique | Personal story or testimonial |
Mix and match these post topics or add additional ones as needed. It’s also a good idea to vary the format of your posts – for example, you might share a written tutorial one week and a video tutorial the next. Again, the key is to keep your content fresh and exciting to your followers.
You do not have to do as many as 20 posts a week, but posting regularly is essential when developing your online presence and getting new enquiries.
I am in the process of using the same strategy for The Judo Coach, where I plan to release a lot more content shortly.
I hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Vince – The Judo Coach, #JudoNation
